The friendship links that exist between Spain's increasingly dictatorial royal family and Thailand's disgraced super rich Chakris, are not the only thing which bind these two archaic institutions together.
It seems Spain's King Juan Carlos has a lot more characteristics in common with Thailand's meddling monarch than people suspect. However, just as in Thailand, few Spaniards openly speak about King Juan Carlos' dirty secrets in public for fear of being slapped with a lese majeste charge.
In fact, the contents of this video may well herald the end of the period of self-censorship and intimidation in Spain, which has hung in the air like the smell of stale kippers since the bad old days of Dictator General Franco.
The reason? A song entitled "A Real (Royal) Story" which has just earned a Spanish punk rock band called Ardor Destómago a lese majeste charge, and as in Thailand, the issue of freedom of speech is now on everyone's lips.
Hardly any foreigners, even those in Spain or those married to Spaniards, ever get to hear about the royal Borbón scandals. This song could well change all that. Listen to the song and read the lyrics and you'll understand why:
A Real (Royal) History
Who is the one who killed his own brother with a hunting shotgun?
Who fired the shot in unclear circumstances?
Who was named successor by a disgusting dictator?
Who was the white elephant?
Who got on well with Franco?
The son of a bitch King Juan Carlos
The son of a bastard king
The son of a bitch Juan Carlos. The son of a bastard king
Who was given yachts by bankers and businessmen?
Who is above the law and pretends to be open?
Who censors thorny issues?
Who rubs shoulders with gangsters?
Who spoke badly of Adolfo Suárez in front of the army?
The son of a bitch King Juan Carlos
The son of a bastard king
The son of a bitch Juan Carlos. The son of a bastard king
Who encouraged Tejero and the armada to rise?
leaving them high and dry?
Who appeared later on television as the leader of the resistance?
Who has his back covered by State secrets?
Who has arse-lickers stuck to him like limpets?
Following him everywhere?
Thais reading the lyrics of this song would be forgiven for thinking that it referred to King Bhumibol, but amazingly the song refers to King Juan Carlos. Yes, the Spanish king also enjoys boating, and he killed his own brother.
Incidently, the final paragraph of the song is especially "thorny". It suggests that King Juan Carlos , not Coronel Tejero, organised the army coup in 1981 (see youtube for videos of this event). Adolfo Suárez was Spain's first ever democratically elected PM after Franco's 40 year dictatorship. The song suggests Adolfo was undermined by the king. Does any of this ring a bell?
Look at the record sleeve. It shows dictator Franco saluting the crowds from a balcony, with his chosen successor Juan Carlos standing alongside. Would it be too far fetched to say that King Juan Carlos and King Bhumibol are soul mates?
Certainly, the similarities between these too aging monarchs is frighteningly similar. But like his Thai "amigo", Juan Carlos should think twice before using Spain's lese majeste law (Article 490 of the criminal code) to silence his critics.
